Strategic Initiatives

The Ohio Council of Community Schools (OCCS) is committed to high-quality education for all students. As an extension of that commitment and dedication to providing assistance to partner schools, OCCS is pleased to be able to offer grants to partner schools and their students to help offset the costs of education. The following strategic initiatives are awarded yearly:

  • New School Technology Grant;
  • Postsecondary Scholarships; and,
  • Teachers of the Year Awards.

New School Technology Grants

As a sponsor of charter schools across Ohio, OCCS awards one-time grants for technology as an extension of its commitment to empower schools to begin operations and this partnership on solid financial ground. This grant aims to use technology funding to improve student achievement, help develop 21st century skills, and support pedagogical strategies.

Postsecondary Scholarships

Each year, the Ohio Council of Community Schools offers multiple scholarships to support students who have attended an OCCS-sponsored school and who wish to further their education after high school. The 2017-2018 school year marks our tenth scholarship cycle and applicatons are due May 12, 2017.

These scholarship opportunities were developed to award academic achievement; help those students with a financial need; and, support first-generation college students. The eligibility criteria and application for each scholarship may be found below:

Teacher of the Year Awards

The OCCS Teachers of the Year Awards recognizes teachers in OCCS-affiliated schools who demonstrate leadership and a strong commitment to student achievement gains. These awards began in the 2012-2013 school year and are meant to recognize teachers in OCCS-sponsored schools who demonstrate leadership and a strong commitment to student achievement and growth. Each year, a teacher from a bricks-and-mortar school and a virtual school are recognized. The two awards are an acknowledgement of the unique challenges and talents required to be a highly effective teacher in those very different environments.
