Four Years of Growth: OCCS-Sponsored Schools Continue to Make Academic Progress

The 2025–2026 Ohio School Report Cards highlight continued academic growth across OCCS-sponsored schools, reflecting the hard work of students, educators, and school leaders throughout Ohio.

At the Ohio Council of Community Schools (OCCS), we're proud to celebrate the progress our sponsored schools are making in classrooms across the state.
During the 2025–2026 school year, OCCS sponsored 48 community schools serving approximately 33,950 students. As a statewide sponsor, we work alongside our schools to support quality educational opportunities while maintaining a strong commitment to accountability and continuous improvement.
This year's Ohio School Report Card results give us plenty to celebrate, including a significant milestone: four consecutive years of improvement in our portfolio's Performance Index.

Four Consecutive Years of Academic Growth

One of the most encouraging findings from this year's report cards is the continued improvement in student achievement.
The Performance Index measures how well students perform on Ohio's state assessments and provides an important indicator of academic achievement.
Across our academic portfolio, the average Performance Index increased from 66.2 in 2023–2024 to 68.6 in 2024–2025, reaching 70.5 in 2025–2026.
This continued upward trend represents sustained academic progress across our portfolio and reflects the ongoing efforts of our schools to strengthen student outcomes.
Progress, which measures student academic growth relative to expectations, remained an area of strength across our portfolio, averaging 3.4 stars.
Together, these results reflect encouraging progress and provide a foundation for continued improvement.

Creating Quality Educational Opportunities Across Ohio

Families deserve access to quality educational opportunities that meet their children's individual needs. An important part of our work as a sponsor is evaluating how our schools perform and how those results compare with other educational options available to families.
This year's report cards offer encouraging findings.
Among OCCS-sponsored schools included in our academic portfolio analysis:

  • 25 schools earned higher Performance Index points than their local school districts.
  • 23 schools earned higher Overall ratings than their local districts.
  • 21 schools earned higher Progress ratings than their local districts.
  • 20 out of 37 schools earned higher Early Literacy ratings than their local districts.

These results demonstrate that many OCCS-sponsored schools are delivering strong academic outcomes within the communities they serve.
While every school has its own strengths and opportunities for growth, these comparisons help us better understand school performance and reinforce the importance of providing families with quality public school options.

Celebrating Progress While Looking Ahead

Report cards provide an important opportunity to recognize academic accomplishments, but they also help us identify where additional support and improvement are needed.
Although our portfolio demonstrated improvement in several key areas, we recognize that there is more work ahead. Strengthening early literacy and preparing students for success beyond graduation remain important priorities.
As a sponsor, our responsibility extends beyond reviewing annual report card results. We work alongside school leaders and governing authorities throughout the year, providing oversight, monitoring, and technical assistance to support continuous improvement.
Our approach is rooted in the belief that accountability and school success go hand in hand. By using academic performance data to guide our work, we can celebrate meaningful progress while remaining focused on the opportunities that lie ahead.
Most importantly, these results represent the dedication of the students, teachers, school leaders, and families who make up our school communities.
We're proud of the progress our schools have made and look forward to building on this momentum as we continue supporting quality educational opportunities for students across Ohio.
