Ohio Council of Community Schools and the Toledo Walleye will launch the Walleye Street Hockey program beginning in January 2017. The street hockey program gives kids in our Toledo schools the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey played in the gymnasium or on the playground, while rewarding students for their success in the classroom.
“The Ohio Council of Community Schools is excited to partner with the Toledo Walleye to provide a unique experience for the kids in our Toledo schools by rewarding academic achievement, literacy, attendance and good behavior,” said Lenny Schafer, Executive Director of Ohio Council of Community Schools.
The Walleye street hockey program not only engages students at eight local schools in the game of hockey but each school will also receive hockey related books to promote reading. Each visit will include an hour-long clinic with Walleye players about basic passing, shooting and stickhandling skills. The participating students will receive a hockey jersey and two tickets to a future Walleye game.
“This is an excellent partnership to connect with children, to inspire them to be physically active and learn about the great sport of hockey,” said Rob Wiercinski, Toledo Walleye Community Relations and Communications Manager.
