OCCS Sponsors Two More Schools

The Ohio Council of Community Schools is proud to sponsor two additional schools in 2020, Valor Academy of Ohio and Ohio Construction Academy (OCA). Both located in Columbus, Valor Academy of Ohio is set to begin their first operating year, and OCA is excited to welcome students back for the 2020-2021 school year.

Ohio Construction Academy (OCA)

The Ohio Construction Academy serves Columbus high school students and offers real-world training in the construction trades. The school is the only of its kind, giving students a fast-track to a promising career in the trades through hands-on training, while maintaining an excellent foundation in academics. The curriculum is blended with online, in-classroom, and hands-on learning.

OCA is accredited by the Educational Empowerment Group (EEG), making it the only construction high school in the U.S. that is backed by a construction trade association. This partnership provides a direct link to construction industry employers with many opportunities for students after graduation.  Students are also able to earn industry-recognized certifications at OCA, including OSHA-30 and First Aid.

Valor Academy of Ohio

Valor Academy of Ohio is a middle school, serving grades 6-8. Unlike a fully virtual or traditional brick-and-mortar, it follows a unique hybrid model that is customizable to the students’ personal learning styles. This model allows for in-person learning, a digital curriculum, and individualized learning. Valor Academy utilizes the award-winning StrongMind curriculum as its primary digital curriculum provider.

Valor Academy is kicking off their first year of operation with a beautiful, newly renovated school building. Unlike many traditional brick-and-mortar schools, the classrooms have an open concept and highly mobile furniture that encourages group learning. Throughout a normal school day, students rotate through various stations, including the digital curriculum, direct instruction from a content-area teacher, small group activities, intervention and remediation, and project-based learning culminating activities.
